Are They Really That Different?

The terms country, state, nation, and others are often used interchangeably, but there are actually specific differences between them. One of the most notable differences is the governmental status of each entity, but there are quite a few others as well. However, once you fully understand the differing characteristics of each, it will be much easier to understand the relationships between the many different entities around the world. Another idea you are likely to encounter when deciphering between these different concepts is that of nationalism. This is something that is being ever more prevalent in the U.S. and around the world, but while it can be powerful, it can also be quite problematic, and the latter is an intriguing matter to discuss.

Nationalism has become a very dominant ideology in the United States and other places around the world. However, in places as diverse as the United States, nationalism can become quite dangerous. In a nutshell, Nationalism is essentially at odds with America’s founding principles, and thus poses a threat to the very democracy we know and love. Due to the fact that America is a glorified mixture of races, cultures, ideologies, and more, it is almost impossible to define what a “real” American looks like. Thus, it is necessary to reconsider nationalism and the implications such a strong ideology holds. It has failed us before and will likely do so again if it continues to remain a guiding force, but having it in smaller doses may be just enough.
