In political geography, the relationships between humans and the environment are of grave importance. One way they are understood is through the concept of political ecology which examines the politics and economics behind them and helps to explain how they shape local practices. In many cases, people in power are the ones that make decisions that have significant environmental impacts. However, they are not the only ones. There are many actions and decisions that individuals make on a daily basis that have either a positive or negative impact on the environment. The main concern that I think of is extinction and how it is steadily increasing without measures to combat it, yet it is becoming ever more prevalent and needs to be addressed.
Extinction is a major issue that does not seem to be given the attention it warrants. With each day the crisis worsens and becomes an even bigger threat to civilization. Not only are humans causing it, they are accelerating it and what makes matters even worse is that it is a crisis that cannot be reversed. With each new population that is exterminated and death of a creature, humanity as a whole loses a piece of its life-support system. Thus, it is vital that the conservation of endangered species, as well as those close to it, be elevated to a global emergency for governments, institutions, and humans alike. In fact, the crisis is becoming equal to that of climate change, and rightfully so since the two are linked after all.
