The face of the Earth says a lot about the people that inhabit it, and this is referred to as the cultural landscape. Different places around the world are structured differently, and this is due largely in part to the varying ways that different groups of people do things. Many factors like religion, history, values, ethnicity, and others influence the development of the cultural landscape across the globe, and thus highlight so much about who people are. One very common piece of cultural landscapes is statues or monuments which are typically used to represent a significant figure or moment to a certain group of people. However, times evolve just as people do and what was relevant in a group’s past may not be so relevant in their present. Thus, this very concept paves the way for a quite controversial matter which is that of altering offensive or outdated statues or monuments.

In recent years, the issue of removing controversial monuments was thrust into the public eye in response to white supremacist activity, the horrific killing of George FLoyd, and other hateful, racist, incidents. While some were intentional, others were destroyed or removed as part of protests that ensued after the instances mentioned above. Ultimately, monuments serve as a public display of a person, event, or moment in history, and sometimes these different things may be associated with times of struggle, depression, sadness, and countless other unsettling emotions. Thus, they can sometimes become a painful reminder of the past or parts of it that still remain, and this is why people may choose to alter, remove, destroy, relocate, or whatever else to statues around the world.
