Privacy equates to being free from observation and there are many areas of life that individuals strive to keep private if at all possible. However, in many instances privacy is something beyond our control, especially in the case of gender and sexuality. Different places and groups view and accept an individual’s gender identity and sexuality differently, and this can significantly affect their options in life. In fact, any identities other than male and female often suffer harsher judgments and less opportunities, but the world seems to be evolving nonetheless. One such way this is occurring is through more gender-neutral spaces, which are creating more inclusive societies for all.
A prime example of places that were once gendered becoming gender-neutral are restrooms, especially in the public sphere. While this is not happening in every single place, there are still many that are taking a chance and making moves to improve the quality of life for people of all identities and sexualities. However, the idea of unisex restrooms remains a controversial one, and although there are certainly both pros and cons, unisex restrooms seem worth considering as long as all people agree to utilize them properly. Both sides of the conflict have very strong reasoning behind their point of views, but that merely supports the need for there to be careful thought and planning before deciding to implement gender-neutral restrooms in public places.
